ALL TERRITORIAL COMMANDERS TASKED TO PROVIDE SECURITY TO PILGRIMS TREKKING TO NAMUGONGO

Latest Posts

As you are all aware, 3rd June, the popular religious pilgrimage of the Uganda Martyrs, will be celebrated at Namugongo. As expressed, pilgrims from the neighbouring countries of DRC, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan, and those from the furthest districts, have started trekking on foot to Namugongo. It will take them several days. One of the distinctive features of long distance trail pilgrimage, is that pilgrims value the experience of walking to renew their faith.

So far, no incidents of crime and safety have been registered, as the pilgrims, continue to trek on foot to Kampala. The IGP has instructed all territorial commanders to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims, while walking through their jurisdictions. They must escort them and provide protection to them while sleeping at churches, schools and community centres. They should restrict all movements under the cover of darkness at night and early morning and further identify those who cannot endure the journey for medical attention. The police ambulances are deployed on all major highways for medical evacuation and emergency response.

To the pilgrims trekking to Namugongo, we urge them to stay with the group, and not be discouraged, but draw strength from the generation of Christians who have made the spiritual journey. Due to the unpredictable weather, they should carry warm clothings, IDs, mobile phones, light bags, reflectors and ensure they have transport money or transport arranged, for their return journey. We further urge the pilgrims, especially new comers to be vigilant and cautions while going through the heavy traffic, and watch against criminals and fraudsters who target phones and other valuables.

Once again, we would like to wish all pilgrims, a safe journey to Namugongo, as they trek to renew their faith and fulfil their religious obligations. We would like to applaud both the Catholic and Protestant Dioceses, for issuing safety guidelines to all pilgrims trekking on foot.

For any security and safety concerns, please call the National Operations rooms at Police Headquarters on 0776999136, 0707600773 or toll free number 0800199699.
