PRESS RELEASE

This is to clarify on an edited video clip of the IGP’s speech, during the opening ceremony of a 5 day retreat for Directors, Heads of Specialised Units and RPC’s that is circulating on various social media platforms.  The edited video quoted him as follows; “one time it went viral, when some police officers in Kajjansi were torturing some people for being members of people power?  So, is it an offence to be a member of people power.   Under which section of the penal code.”

While the clip comes from a genuine NTV full transcript, the creator of the video, edited the segment leaving onto the IGP’s crucial message on the “Eradication of violation of rights of suspects especially torture as an investigative technique”, to instead portray the IGP as imparting a particular political message which could raise suspicions of political bias or agenda.

We want to reiterate that the IGP is not into divisive politics, and we would like to caution media actors on the importance of reporting of basic facts, to avoid deliberate manipulations misleading the public about the validity and relevance of public statements.

We have tracked down the IGPs full speech during his address to the police officers at the retreat and loaded its full transcript on our website www.upf.go.ug
