IGP’S PRESS RELEASE ON THE POLICE-PUBLIC COMMUNICATION PLAN

INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE’S 

 I warmly welcome you to this Press conference where I wish to inform the public about the Uganda Police Force Communication Plan.

Generally, the security situation in the country is normal except for a few isolated cases of criminality that we are firmly dealing with.

I greatly thank the Public for the cooperation rendered to the UPF and call upon you to support the institution in this communication initiative of fighting crime.

Uganda Police Force has set up fixed counter telephones in all Police stations and posts throughout Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area. The purpose is to make members of the public to access police services in case of need.

The phones will be available on a 24/7 basis and I caution all the Police officers at the various stations and Posts to ensure that this service and the numbers are availed to all members of the public.

The Fixed Counter Telephones are being added to the already existing National Emergency Call center lines, Operational telephone services with the various unit commanders country wide and the Toll free lines in the various units.

The Counter telephone numbers, Toll Free Lines and the operational numbers will be displayed at various Counters/ Receptions in all stations and posts and will also be availed on the Police website.

The UPF has been having some challenges with the National Emergency Call center (999 and 112) but we are rectifying the remaining obstacles with the Uganda Communications Commission.

We intend to roll out the Counter Telephone Plan to all the other parts of the country but meanwhile we call upon the members of the public in areas where the Counter fixed phones have not been installed to utilize the existing operational phones and the Toll free lines.

All Unit Commanders are to ensure that they disseminate Police telephone numbers of the respective units to the people within their Areas Of Responsibilities. This is to be done in partnership with the Local Council systems especially LC1 through the Secretary for Information.

Each home in every village whether they have a phone or not should be encouraged to have a record of the telephone number of the nearest Police unit.

We urge members of the public not to abuse but fully utilize the available telephone services by availing timely information to enable the UPF to fulfill its mandate.
