| The Uganda Police Force is a full-time institution of the Government of Uganda, whose primary responsibility is maintaining law and order in the country.

The present Uganda Police Force became an institution on 25th May 1906, then called the British Territorial Protectorate Police. Before then, it was created as a Para-military Force called The Uganda Armed Constabulary, whose prime duty was to quell the various wars, riots and unrest which were continuously breaking out among tribes.

Since 1906 the Uganda Police Force has undergone a number of institutional metamorphoses which have culminated into the current Uganda Police Force.
On its inauguration as a police force, Capt Edward who became the first IGP clearly spelt out the functions and responsibilities of the police force as:
-Prevention and detection of crime
-Preservation of peace and order.
Today, the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda mandates the UPF:
- To protect life and property
- To preserve law and order
- To prevent and detect crime; and
- To cooperate with the civilian authority and other security organs established under the constitution and with the population generally

Provincial Police Control System
- From inception till the Idd Amin regime, there were only 4 provinces/Regions of: Buganda, Northern, Eastern Western and Karamoja sub-region.
- To date, the Uganda Police Force regional command stands at 14 against 93 district police commands, intended to bring policing closer to the public
The Organizational Structure of the Uganda Police Force
The Uganda Police Force is under the command of the Inspector General of Police who is the Chief executive of the Force. The Inspector General is also the Chief Public Relations Officer
By 2008, the Force had transformed to five Directorates of;

- Special Branch
- Local Administration Police
